Conservation: It Does a World of Good!
Conservation project guidelines, ideas and resources
"Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors; we borrow it from our Children."
- 3/4 Native America Proverb
The Boy Scouts of America has long been a friend to the outdoors. While the BSA is a leader in helping people understand how to do no harm to the environment, through Leave No Trace and promotion of its principles, the idea of giving back to the environment has not been as vocally espoused as a policy or principle. However, there are numerous awards given by BSA for work in conservation, for projects ranging in scale from cleaning up local parks to wholesale elimination of invasive species of plants from a locale. This small handbook is an attempt to provide to scouting units and their leaders a sampling of ideas for conservation projects, as well as a list of resources to contact when trying to coordinate a conservation project, whether it be a service project or for the purpose of earning a conservation award. It is by no means all-inclusive, as there are many worthwhile projects that are simply not listed here. Be creative, think outside the box, and get out there to do something!
