Pinewood Derby - Championship Races - 2010


Council-wide Championship Race Day is Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Fees are $5 per youth until March 26.  March 27-April 9, fees are $8.  After April 9, fees are $10.

 
Each Cub Scout Pack can enter five drivers with their cars - ONE FOR EACH CUB SCOUT RANK. (One Tiger, one Wolf, one Bear, one Webelos I, and one Webelos II.) A Webelos II who has graduated this year into a Scout Troop is permitted to race. In addition to the Grand Trophy winners, Trophies will also be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners for each rank, along with a "Best of Show", "Judges Choice", and "Most Radical" trophy for each rank. All drivers will receive a participation recognition.

Official Pinewood Derby Rules

All cars will be inspected during registration for compliance with the specifications set forth below. Cars that fail to meet specifications will not be permitted to race. Please read all rules and regulations carefully.

1. The body in the official BSA Pinewood Derby Kit, SN: 17006 must be used. Bodies of other materials will be disqualified. The body may be shaped, hollowed out, or built up from the original block as long as it meets all other specifications.  No loose material of any kind is allowed in or on the car. Any additions to the original body (drivers, decals, paint, weights, etc.) must be firmly attached.

2. The car’s width shall not exceed 2- 3/4 inches and its length shall not exceed 7 inches.

3. Front nose of car must not contain a notch, which will embed racing peg. If a car’s front nose is deemed to have an unfair advantage due to notching or hollowing, it will be run backwards at the discretion of the race officials.

4. The weight of the race-ready car shall not exceed 5 ounces as measured on the official EXPO Pinewood Derby weight scale.

5. The width between the wheels shall be 1- 3/4.

6. The bottom clearance between the car and track shall be 3/8".

7. Axles, wheels, and body shall be made from materials in the BSA current year Official Grand Prix Derby Kit, SN: 17006.

8. Wheel bearings, washers, bushings, and similar devices are prohibited.

9. Except f or sanding away only the mold marks (flashing), wheels may not be modified in any way. NO reductions in width or diameter, or changes in shape are allowed.

10. The car shall not ride on any kind of spring or suspension.

11. The car must be freewheeling, with no start devices. There is no designated front or back to the supplied body; either end may be declared the front.

12. No lubricating oils or liquids may be used.  Axles may be lubricated with powder graphite or liquid applied silicone. No lubricants may be applied once the cars are registered and impounded.

13. Judging in the condition of the wheels, axles, etc., will be based on the information on the Grand Prix Derby Kit, SN: 17006 information sheet as well as the Indian Waters Council Official Rules Stated Above.

14. If variances to these criteria are discovered during the race, the car in question will be disqualified pending race manager’s decision.

15. All cars will be impounded when registered.  Cars will not be returned until after the race. After being impounded, repairs will be limited to only replacing axles/wheels that are broken or lost during the race.

16. At registration, assigned numbers will be attached by labels and must be clearly visible on the back of the car. The assigned number will correspond with the racing number. Other numbers may appear on the car other than the rear.

17. All participants shall sign a form at registration stating that they have read and agree to comply with all rules stated above before being allowed to race.

Scouting encourages good sportsmanship.

Cars will be disqualified if the Scout or his parent (s) display unsportsmanlike conduct on the race site.
