The Indian Waters Council, Boy Scouts of America is pleased to announce that Tobin Cassels will serve as the Council’s 2008 Friends of Scouting Campaign Chair.
Tobin first began working at Southeastern Freight Lines, his family-owned company, as a trailer shop mechanic in 1973 when he was thirteen years old. In subsequent summers, he worked in the shop and warehouse as well as serving as a pick-up and delivery driver.
In 1981, Tobin graduated with a degree in economics from Washington & Lee University and began working full-time as a management trainee at Southeastern Freight Lines.
In 1989, he was promoted to Vice President of Terminal Operations and served in this function until being promoted to Vice Chairman in 1994. Tobin served as Vice Chairman until 2001 when he was promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer.
Tobin married Pat Hook of West Columbia and together they have a seventeen-year-old daughter named Rustin and a fourteen-year-old son named Toby.
Tobin was an active Scout in Troop 10, chartered to Eastminister Presbyterian Church during the early 1970’s and remembers his Scouting experiences fondly.
Tobin has been involved in many nonprofit organizations in the Columbia area. A few recent examples include serving on the Sisters of Charity Foundation, chairing the Capital Campaign of The Cooperative Ministry and serving as the immediate past Chair of The Food, Shelter, and Safety Council of the United Way. In 2002, he won the award of the Outstanding Philanthropist in the Columbia area. In 2006, Tobin was presented the Alice Kemp DeWitt Community Impact Award for being the outstanding volunteer of the United Way and was also the co-winner, along with his father, for the 2006 Humanitarian of the Year Award. Tobin also enjoys being an active member of Shandon Baptist Church.
